about

Mark paints colourful and bold abstract paintings. He is strongly influenced by his observations of the outdoors and the clash between the natural world and built environment.

You keep on balancing and balancing and balancing until the picture wins, because then the subject's turned into the picture.

Mark Irving

Mark’s work is visually striking, blending gestural energy with formal structure. His paintings are built up in layers of paint and mark-making, with each layer being applied, reworked, and refined until a harmonious balance between colour, shape, and texture is achieved. The tension between the sharp, defined edges of familiar forms and the ambiguity of abstraction is a key element in his process.

He studied at Middlesex University in London and graduated in Fine Art from the University of the Creative Arts, Farnham in the late 90s. Mark then worked from his studio in the Chocolate Factory in North London. He has exhibited work in both solo and group shows and takes on commissions.
